Walkie Talkie locator

Years ago a fellow named Bill Morgan wrote about using Walkie Talkies as a loator. Channel 7 for gold and I think channel 8 for silver. ANyway, it is not convenient to leave the thing in the transmit mode--wears batteries and overheats the device. Of course the idea is to place it on the ground and wait a few minutes before circling it with L-rod(s). One time I had it in the receiver mode and noticed I got a response with the L-rods.
